The IRS commissioner recently testified before a House committee regarding Direct File.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has released the pilot version of the agency’s updated electronic tax return filing system. The service allows taxpayers to file directly with the IRS and interface with IRS personnel using a chatbot. The service, called Direct File, is initially available in 12 states on a limited basis.
“I don’t want to call myself a dummy, but this is taxes for dummies right here,” Dixie Warden, the first user of the new service, told a news outlet.
If the pilot period is successful, the IRS will open up Direct File to the public, which could change how Americans file their taxes. This program is opposed by tax filing companies, who offer tax filing services for a fee, and some legislators, who view funding the IRS as a burden on governmental finances.
During a recent House Ways and Means Committee hearing, IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel insisted that the agency has both “a responsibility and an authority to offer taxpayers different approaches for how to meet their tax obligation.”
